Final Message From Sheriff Henke

Dear Linn County Citizens,

As most of you are aware, I have submitted my resignation with the Linn County Commission, effective March 1st, 2024. I have accepted the Assistant Chief position with the Brookfield Police Department. Moving forward, the Linn County Commission has selected Chief Deputy Carrie Melte as the Interim Sheriff to finish out the remainder of the term. I have full faith in the ability of Carrie to continue moving the Office in the right direction. With less than nine months remaining in the term, this will allow the election process to continue as it normally would with no additional costs to the county. The Assistant Chief position is one which would likely not be available at the completion of my term and therefore made it a decision that had to be made now.

Serving as your Sheriff has been an honor and privilege beyond words, and it is a decision I have not taken lightly.
Over the years, I have had the immense pleasure of working alongside dedicated deputies, community leaders, and, most importantly, the wonderful residents of our community. Together, we have faced challenges, celebrated victories, and worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in our midst.

However, after much reflection and consideration, I have made the decision to step down from this role. This decision is not easy, but I believe it is the right one for both my family and I. As much as I have cherished my time as Sheriff, I am excited about my future with the Brookfield Police Department. I want to thank the Linn County Commission for allowing K-9 Zlatyi to make the move as well.  This will allow me to provide the same K-9 service throughout the county, as well as the surrounding area, that has been provided since October of 2015.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering support throughout my tenure as Sheriff. Your trust, collaboration, and commitment to our community have been the driving force behind everything we have accomplished together. It has been an incredible journey, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved as a community.

While I may be stepping down from my role as Sheriff, please know that my dedication to this community remains steadfast. I will continue to support and serve in any way I can, and I am confident that the future of our community is bright with the incredible individuals who call it home.

Thank you once again for the privilege of serving as your Sheriff. It has been the honor of a lifetime, and I will forever cherish the memories and relationships forged during my time in this role.
