CCW Permits

APPOINTMENTS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL CCW PERMIT ACTIVITIES.

As dictated by RSMo 571.101, a Missouri resident is eligible to apply for a concealed carry permit if they meet the following requirements: 

  • Is at least nineteen years of age, a citizen or permanent resident of the United States and either:
    • Has assumed residency in this state; or
    • A member of the Armed Forces stationed in Missouri, or the spouse of such member of the military;
  • Is at least nineteen years of age, or at least eighteen years of age and a member of the United States Armed Forces or honorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces, and a citizen of the United States and either:
    • Has assumed residency in this state; or
    • A member of the Armed Forces stationed in Missouri; or
    • The spouse of such member of the military stationed in Missouri and nineteen years of age;
  • Has not pled guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere or been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year under the laws of any state or of the United States other than a crime classified as a misdemeanor under the laws of any state and punishable by a term of imprisonment of two years or less that does not involve an explosive weapon, firearm, firearm silencer or gas gun;
  • Has not been convicted of, pled guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to one or more misdemeanor offenses involving crimes of violence within a five-year period immediately preceding application for a concealed carry permit or if the applicant has not been convicted of two or more misdemeanor offenses involving driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs or the possession or abuse of a controlled substance within a five-year period immediately preceding application for a concealed carry permit;
  • Is not a fugitive from justice or currently charged in an information or indictment with the commission of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year under the laws of any state of the United States other than a crime classified as a misdemeanor under the laws of any state and punishable by a term of imprisonment of two years or less that does not involve an explosive weapon, firearm, firearm silencer, or gas gun;
  • Has not been discharged under dishonorable conditions from the United States Armed Forces;
  • Has not engaged in a pattern of behavior, documented in public or closed records, that causes the sheriff to have a reasonable belief that the applicant presents a danger to himself or others;
  • Is not adjudged mentally incompetent at the time of application or for five years prior to application, or has not been committed to a mental health facility, as defined in section 632.005, or a similar institution located in another state following a hearing at which the defendant was represented by counsel or a representative;
  • Submits a completed application for a permit as described in subsection 3 of this section;
  • Submits an affidavit attesting that the applicant complies with the concealed carry safety training requirement pursuant to subsections 1 and 2 of section 571.111;
  • Is not the respondent of a valid full order of protection which is still in effect;
  • Is not otherwise prohibited from possessing a firearm under section 571.070 or 18 U.S.C. Section 922(g)

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

A certificate of firearms safety training course completion may be issued to any applicant by a qualified firearms safety instructor, however, the Linn County Sheriff's Office will NOT accept online training certificates. 

On the certificate of course completion the qualified firearms safety instructor shall affirm that the individual receiving instruction has taken and passed a firearms safety course of at least eight hours in length taught by the instructor that included:

  1. Handgun safety in the classroom, at home, on the firing range and while carrying the firearm;
  2. A physical demonstration performed by the applicant that demonstrated his or her ability to safely load and unload either a revolver or a semiautomatic pistol and demonstrated his or her marksmanship with either firearm;
  3. The basic principles of marksmanship;
  4. Care and cleaning of concealable firearms;
  5. Safe storage of firearms at home;
  6. The requirements of this state for obtaining a concealed carry permit from the sheriff of the individual's county of residence;
  7. The laws relating to firearms as prescribed in this chapter;
  8. The laws relating to the justifiable use of force as prescribed in chapter 563;
  9. A live firing exercise of sufficient duration for each applicant to fire either a revolver or a semiautomatic pistol, from a standing position or its equivalent, a minimum of twenty rounds from the handgun at a distance of seven yards from a B-27 silhouette target or an equivalent target;
  10. A live-fire test administered to the applicant while the instructor was present of twenty rounds from either a revolver or a semiautomatic pistol from a standing position or its equivalent at a distance from a B-27 silhouette target, or an equivalent target, of seven yards.

EXCEPTIONS

Concealed carry permits may be issued to those qualifying by other means without attending a specialized concealed carry training course. Providing the following will replace the requirement for the CCW training course.

  1. A photocopy of a certificate that shows the applicant completed a firearms safety course given by or under the supervision of any state, county, municipal, or federal law enforcement agency; or
  2. Is a qualified firearms safety instructor as defined by RSMo 571.111; or
  3. Proof that the applicant currently holds any type of valid peace officer license issued under the requirements of chapter 590; or
  4. Proof that the applicant is currently allowed to carry firearms in accordance with the certification requirements of section 217.710; or
  5. Proof that the applicant is currently certified as any class of corrections officer by the Missouri department of corrections and has passed at least one eight-hour firearms training course, approved by the director of the Missouri department of corrections under the authority granted to him or her, that includes instruction on the justifiable use of force as prescribed in chapter 563.

New Permits

Missouri residents can apply for a 5-year, 10-year, 25-year or Lifetime CCW permit.

  • 5-year permits are valid to be recognized out of state.
  • 10-year, 25-year and Lifetime permits are recognized in Missouri ONLY. 

All permits have a similar application process and must be completed at the Sheriff's Office in the county of residence.

  • Extended & Lifetime permit application process includes the following:
    • Complete the designated "Concealed Carry Permit Application".
    • Must successfully pass a background check.
    • Provide proof that you have successfully completed an approved CCW safety training course, provide a valid Missouri driver's license or nondriver's license or military identification, and proof of residency within the county.
    • Submit payment for the designated fee as dictated by RSMo 571.205
      • 10-year permit        $200.00
      • 25-year permit        $250.00
      • Lifetime permit       $500.00
    • Permit cards will be issued the day of application if approved.
    • Background checks will be performed every five years for the duration of the permit.
  • 5-year permit application process includes the following:
    • Complete a "Concealed Carry Permit Application" & fingerprint cards.
    • Provide proof that you have successfully completed an approved CCW safety training course, provide a valid Missouri driver's license or nondriver's license or military identification, and proof of residency within the county.
    • Pay a fee of $27.25 payable to "Criminal Record System Funds" for a complete background and criminal history check ran by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
      • You will be notified of background check results within 2 to 4 weeks.
    • If approved, return to the Sheriff's Office to receive your permit card and pay a fee of $72.75 payable to "Linn County Sheriff's Office".
    • If denied, a letter with further instructions will be mailed to you.

Renewals

Renewals must be completed at the Sheriff's Office in the county of residence.

The permit renewal processes consists of the following:

  • Complete a "Concealed Carry Permit Renewal Application".
  • A background check will be completed and may take up to 30 minutes for the results.
    • If approved, a permit card will be issued, and you will pay a fee of $50.00 payable to "Linn County Sheriff's Office".
    • If denied, you will receive a letter with instructions regarding appeals, etc.
  • If you fail to renew your permit prior to the expiration date, a fee of $10.00 will be charged for each month past the expiration date for up to six months.
  • If you fail to renew your permit within six months of the expiration date, you must start the process from the beginning, including fingerprints for 5-year permits, etc.

Change of Address / Name (All Permits)

Permit holders are required to report any change in address or name within 30 days. If you fail to do so, your permit will become invalid.

  • A fee of $10.00 payable to "Linn County Sheriff's Office" will be assessed to reissue a permit card with the new address / name.

Lost / Destroyed Permits (All Permits)

Permit holders are required to report a lost / destroyed permit within 7 days. 

  •  A fee of $10.00 payable to "Linn County Sheriff's Office" will be assessed to reissue a new permit card.

As stated above, appointments are required for all CCW permit activities.
